Yes, these words only seem heavy, actually we have many more students of your child's age group who are going through the same curriculum and they have improved a lot. The curriculum will also be personalized for your kid so your child will not find it too difficult to learn.
I feel like I am reborn being able to communicate with children again as a teacher. And, what is even better, I won't have to depend on schools or tuitions to teach something to students that may or may not help them to enrich their lives. I don't have to help students get good marks even if they don't learn anything.
I am going to rely on technology and a startup platform which will help me teach kids English speaking and creative writing which I love. I earned this skill outside the CBSE curriculum thanks to my school. I made a name for myself for these very things when I was in school. I am still proud to remember that I was chosen as the editor. So, I love to be able to start with this company as I plan on starting my life afresh.
I want to think about something today, truly want to reflect about it today, I want to reconsider all my conclusions and find one true conclusion which will stand the test of these ever changing times.
Today, I went through a Planet Spark Training session. The Master Trainer presented a scenario where a parent wants to ask: My child is an average student in school and your curriculum does not match with the school syllabus. Why should I admit the child here?
It is a very valid question, dear Diary, and I want to answer it. Actually, I did answer the question and the Master Trainer liked my response. So, first let me tell you my response.
I said: Actually Ma'am, our syllabus does not follow the convention which schools follow, we encourage kids to learn out of the box. Schools teach kids that syllabus which may or may not prove to be important in the student's life or future. We teach the public speaking skill which will always be useful to your child. We do not follow the rote drills which schools encourage, we don't tell our students to memorize a bunch of lines and pass an examination. We actually make the student interact and understand to teach them a skill. Now, your child is an average student because maybe the schools don't give any one to one support or they encourage learinng by rote method. But, we give personalized lessons. We will try to understand what your child likes and what they don't like and carry out the classes in that manner. Our style of teaching is to understand every student's tastes and help them build accordingly. So, our course helps build confidence in a child and after enrolling here, hopefully this confidence will help them excel even at school. They may also excel in other extra curricular activities or follow any career path of your choice or theirs. So, our course is an essential ingredient of life, every child is special to us and we don't call any student 'average' because if a child does not perform brilliantly then it is the educator's fault, may be the school does not allow their individuality to flourish, but we do. Every child has a champion within and you will be able to feel the difference once your child starts to learn with us.
Now notice my response, dear Diary. I said that the school may or may be give the education which the child will find useful in the future. But, I never said that what the school is doing is good for the kid. I did not even consider a boy being called 'an average' a justice to the child's brilliance. I said that the child may perform well in school or any other extra curricular activity and follow the career path of their choice with the confidence we help to build.
Imagine, dear Diary, what would happen if I had dared to say this to the parent some fifteen years ago or even a decade ago? It would be a joke. The schools had meant everything back then and now it is slipping into a position of unimportance. Doing good at school used to be the parameter to guage any child a decade back, now I can happily blame the schools and educators for the failure of a child. I can protest.
A startup does not become successul by just being a startup, it becomes successful when it caters to the needs of the people.
I also want to tell you, dear Diary, about when happened when I made a slight blunder during a training session. And, I realized how lucky I was to get the kind of training that I was getting. A decade back, it had been my dream to become a professor and then I decided not to because Calcutta University disgusted me. I had also learned that colleges do not teach anything. Do you know, Diary, what NIIT does to promote itself? It says that go to college only for degree but go to NIIT for skills and jobs. Arena Animation and so many more are following the same model. People have stopped going to colleges yet the government sector makes it mandatory to have University degrees. But the govenrment sector also has so much reservations so I do not blame them if they are not updated to do good to people. How long before the government jobs become a thing of the past and no one in their sane minds ever try to get them?
Diary, a decade ago, people wanted to enrol their children in government colleges of repute. Now, people are eager to enrol their kids into Planet Spark! I mean, the success story of this startup is great. And, I am not the kind to trust the websites and success stories and the hype these startups create in media but even I have to admit. Hats off to their PSAT test, the child pedagogy section was awesome. Take any person who has the mindset of 2010 and they won't be able to pass the PSAT. I was thrilled and then I wondered what they would be training us in the training sessions, may be the technical nuances would be covered, nothing more, I thought. But, I was so wrong! They have taught me how to teach and that is a very great thing because I have been taught be some of the best teachers like Mr. MS Banerjee, Mrs. Archana Pareda, Mrs. Rita Prasad, Mr. Jagadish Kalakar, etc. And, yet this platform will provide me with so much to learn. I never want to stop working here.
So, one day during these trainings, the Master Trainer showed a recorded video of a child delivering a speech about pollution. He said something like 'If our planet is clean then the aliens will like to come and stay with us too.' I cannot forget the sweet but hesitant voice. I did like the imagination but I did not like the hesitation. Yet, I wondered if it was alright for me as a teacher to let a child talk about aliens when delivering a speech in the public? Wouldn't that make him a laughing stock? So, when I was asked to share my feedback, I shared it as:
When talking about things you are watching in cartoons like aliens then be confident while speaking about them. Do not hesitate to speak your mind when you are thinking out of the box. Otherwise, omit this alien part completely. You can do better by either thinking and practising before you speak so you can speak about these things openly or omit speaking about them at all.
The trainer said that I should not try to hinder the imagination and creativity of a child. I would be allowed to correct the child at a later stage but I should not do it in the beginning stages especially during the demo. This part deserved an applause from me. Imagine a public speaking platform of repute telling teachers to work with the child and not to force anything upon them even if it does not sound too serious. Great! This platform does deserve an applause from me. And, from someone as skeptical and hard to please as I am, that is saying something.
And, why just the children? Also, the way they are conducting these interviews and helping with the entire training and onboarding process, even the teachers will not have trouble with anything. This platform is not helping to build machines as in schools, neither out of its freelance teachers nor out of its students. It is focussing on wholesome growth. I wonder how much longer the schools which still follow the British model will be able to continue their businesses in India.
Actually, it was the system of ancient India where children were taught in the Gurukuls according to their abilities, strengths and weaknesses and not on the basis of a curriculum that did not allow individuality or creativity. CCE model by CBSE was a valiant effort in this direction but it could have been better. It only helped distribute the workload for the students, it did not lessen the workload at all. And, why should learning be a work or a load? Aren't children natural learners and learn by imitating the adults they like? Planet Spark is encouraging its teachers to become that likeable adult. The British could take it away from the children is something very shameful. And, just why did our ancestors follow the British model when Gandhiji was against it is beyond my comprehension.
Schools have failed everyone. Right from killing off and throwing children off their top storeys to attacking their minds and tender hearts and bodies, these schools have proved that home tutoring of kids has become a mandatory concern. I will never tell a student to become a regular student at a college and judging by the Azamgarh Shreya Tiwari case, I will never let my child step foot into any school ever. A lot needs to be done in this direction, schools have become either havens of free food in the name of mid day meals or agents to finish off a child emotionally, intellectually and in many instances, even physically.
A lot and a lot needs to be done in this direction. The rise and fall of Byjus and the steady growth of Physics Wallah Alakh Pandey and now that I am getting to know the Planet Spark platform have opened my eyes and yes, there is always a place for good teachers and always enough room for them.
I was told that the mock would take only an hour so I stRted at 8:30pm on 12 th nov but it took so long. I finally wrnt to bed on 14th nov 3:30 am. Was nauseous the entire day after I woke up at 11:50 am. HA HA

Finally on 15th I have the result of mock 1.
Now, I am busy appearing for mock 2. I chose junior demo because during the first training week, I was in the junior break out room. The usual trainer, Rachna Dua was not available and another woman who looked like my friend, Sirisha, delivered the class.

I am getting better at these demos and I am getting more and more fond of myself.
19th Nov 2023- Appearing for the mock in the middle of the night.
Mock 2 results did not arrive yet but I started mock 3. By now, I am getting used to the demo classes. Yes, it was a lot less hassle than the two mocks I had before. Hopefully will get feedback soon and get onboarded too. Can't wait to meet real students.

How a parent makes a demo request on the website-
they provide their phone numbers and other details.
If I want to conduct a demo then I will go to my preferred time slot and choose the demo-demo acceptance.
I make a slot confirmation call-to make sure that the parent will be available to save my time.

How many demos to accept, conduct, and what is the probability?
Here is the funnel-
A lot of demo cancellations and rescheduled happen.
A minimum number of demos is a demo a day and two over the weekend. But, the larger the number of demos conducted, the better.
The teacher has to be very consistent to be successful.
5 demo acceptances each day is the maximum. Not all demos are going to get conducted.
2 hours time to update the lead status. So, don't accept more than 3 at a time.
In the last 48 hours, don't get more than 8 demo cancellations.
Initially, the rating will be 5/10.
A reschedule is also an update to the status of a demo.
If a parent rescheduled then call the parent and confirm the rescheduling. So, within 24 hours, put it away and you get the time to update the lms.
If a parent cancels a demo then you update it as cancelled.
Accept a lead where you get at least 2 hours between the call and the demo.
Do a status update as soon as you accept a demo request.
After you conduct a demo then update the lms to conducted only then does the pay-off gets released.
Even if you for some reason conduct the demo using google meet then click a screenshot and upload it to the lms and mark it to 'conducted'. A small amount of money will be given to you even for that.
Using free system call, many times parents do not receive the call. But, if they want to contact you later then
you can connect your number so that when they call the system number you get the phone on your number.
Try to accept the leads from your geographical area so that there is no language issue.
Know everything about planet spark and look like an experienced teacher who knows a lot about planet spark.

How to filter out a lead?
Location matters a lot. Accept from developed cities.
Pune>>Bangalore>>
Delhi>>Gurgaon>>
Mumbai>MP (Indore and Bhopal)>>J&K(Anywhere)
North Indians avoid south Indian parents because of the language barrier.

Timed demo- parent has given a time. We will only accept it. Try to avoid untimed demos.
Try free call two times then use show phone number. - People do not like to receive company numbers.
During the confirmation call, build a rapport because why will anyone join your class otherwise? Ask the parents if their child speaks English, if the child is introvert of extrovert, it will engage the parents and the teacher will know what to expect.
Demo should be postponed today or tomorrow and if the parent postpones the demo class further then the parent is just avoiding it. Do not let the parent reschedule the class at all. The last resort is to give an option of tomorrow for conducting the demo.
Grade- kg to 3rd (Not a definite grade so try to reject.)

Only public spearking- not a good priority.
What matters is a parents' interest. So, don't make it mandatory to make the parent join using a laptop, mobile works fine. Then don't force both parents to join. Conduct the demo with even if one parent.
If a call is not being received by the parent, don't cancel but reschedule the demo.
Parent demo confirmed>>Give a longer time (reschedule if for the same time next day. )
Don't hold a lead for more than 24 hours.
A demo class once expired cannot be brought back so always update it taking the time limit into consideration.
After you have conducted the demo class, go back to update the status to 'conducted'. Then you will get a feedback form.
Rating improves if you conduct one demo per day.
if the demo class is conducted for over 70 minutes then you get Rs. 200,
IF the demo class is conducted for 60-70 minutes then you get Rs. 150
If the demo class is conducted for less than 60 minutes then you get less than Rs. 500.
You can make up to 6 cancellations and expires in forty eight hours. Even if the parent refuress then don't cancel more than three demos in a day. Reschedule it for tomorrow and then cancel it the next day.
Share the link over whatsapp with the parent.
Ask parents during confirmation calls if their phone number is their whatsapp number or not.
Free call system does not work for whatsapp so share it from your personal number.
Strategy
In one day, accept total five demos.
DOn't accept all five demos on one go. (2+2+1)
ACcept two demos, connect with the parents>>updste status

Accept one demo, connect with the parents>>update status.
Out of these, we will conduct two classes each day. ON weekdays, accept on evening time slot.
Weekdays, accept after 1 pm. Start working 11 am onwards. By the afternoon time, every good lead will be lost.
Do not accept a demo if the location is not accepted.
If the parent is busy then tell the parent that it will take only 30 seconds to confirm the demo time and tell them that you will call them later at a certain time to know about the child and inform them about the demo.
Parents sometimes just want their kids to be able to speak English. Parents don't know what we cover. So, we have to tell this to the parent.
South Indian parents say that they don't have any budget for anything additional. Tell them that it is just a free demo class. You have to invest time not money. Then tell them that we will only try to figure out if your child needs this course or not in our free demo class.
If the child has many other extra-curriculars, they will say: I don't think this is important for my child.
Lower middle class says: I have never heard about planet spark. So give them a brief idea about it.
Reschedule is done only when the parent is genuinely interested in joining the demo. Otherwise, the parent should not be allowed to reschedule it then they are not likely to attend.

If someone says that I will call you back.
Tell them that you are going to call him after one hour. If they are interested then they will tell you to call exactly when and agree.
Don't call anyone 'sir' or 'mam'. Ask their name.
