There is some knowledge that cannot be revealed in the normal waking state. It is something beyond rationality. Middle English and Romantic literature displayed a lot of dream visions. 
The narrator falls asleep and dreams an allegorical dream and then he wakes up again. The dream is prompted by the events in the waking life of the dreamer.

it is an idealized world with desirable qualities. 
Mythical and religious utopias
It is about a past when humans used to live in harmony with nature and God. There was no war or oppression. There was no hard or painful work.
