Virtual reality or augmented reality is a method of simulating real-life situations by the use of computers. Sometimes, you have to wear a helmet. At other times gloves. All this is to fool your senses.
How does virtual reality work?
The gyroscopic sensors, magnetometers, and accelerators find use in VR. They understand how you move and track your motion and reactions to this virtual world.

Magnetometers: A magnetometer is a device that helps to determine the direction and strength of the magnetic field. We find it in headsets in front of the eyes.

For an excellent VR experience, the VR setup has to cover the entire field of view. While humans have 220 degrees field of view, VR covers only 180 degrees.
Frame rate in VR
The frame of reference has to be controlled very well. The frame of reference has to move incredibly fast for giving the best real-life experience to the user. The best frame rate in use is about 60 frames per second. The too-high frame rate can cause nausea in the user.
Audio and sound
When you are in your real-life surroundings, you both see and hear objects. Hence, the audio and sound quality has to be excellent. The sound used in VR is spatial in type.
Spatial sound: Spatial sound means the sound that flows all around you. It even flows overhead. While surround sound plays only horizontally around you, spatial sound has a three-dimensional and flowing effect. And, stereo sound can only play on the right and the left directions.
Head tracking and safety
The VR headset uses either 3 or 6 degrees of freedom. This is essential if the user wants to move freely. Then the external sensors also sense the position of the person with respect to the room. This means the user may immerse themselves in the virtual world but they will never meet with an accident in the real world.

Sensory displays or Head Mounted Displays (HMD)
We have two eyes. If we close one eye then we cannot thread a needle. It is because the two eyes provide two slightly distinct perspectives. This allows us to see depth.
So, one computer screen cannot provide a similar experience. Hence, two different small monitors are placed in front of the two eyes to mimic this natural phenomenon. The two monitors provide two slightly different perspectives.
Similarly, there are two ears in our body. The two ears provide two different perspectives of sound. So, the stereoscopic sound helps to do this. Two different sound effects are produced in two different ears.
Graphics accelerator card
They work for three-dimensional computer graphics. They allow completing the work efficiently. They sometimes use ASIC chips. It mainly helps to process graphical data.
Input devices
Keyboards, mouse, and joysticks are some of the input devices used in VR. The additional equipment is head and ear mounted devices and even gloves to full bodysuits.
