 It is all about the Norman conquest. The Normans would not give patronage to the English language but they would give preference to Norman French. Norman-French was considered more sophisticated and the English language rude. There were the gleemen who would keep the English tradition alive through oral works. 

Pagan Danes were the ancestors of the Normans and the British. The Normans had become Frenchmen with time and the English kept their pagan values alive.
