THE DRESS MAKER
I am a dressmaker. I make clothes for all my village. All people around me ask ," Is my shirt ready?", "Is my lehenga ready?" , is my.... ? So you see I am busy but not too busy to write this blog. I love to make things that are worthy and that are nice that make you feel good and that make you rejoice. Right from the new borns to the grown ups I make dresses that fit. I make according to your needs. You don't look too fat or thin in these clothes but you look just perfect. I make clothes not ready made but on a sewing machine.
I learnt this art and craft for a living you think but no, it was my grandmother and her need. Widowed at a young age and raising a family of five kids, she had this only craft as her knowledge and she could use it to feed them. She had learnt it from her mother for every housewife should know these crafts... So thought her mother and taught her this sewing to mend her kid's torn trousers and make kurtas for her husband. This ended up being her daily bread and so she liked it and respected this knowledge. She taught me this for she never wanted her loss of humility. Her grand daughter would learn this art even if she had to sew for herself.
Now I have a sprawling business. I am the famous tailor in town. My electric sewing machine sews all day and my grand mother's old machine lay in rust. It is bulky, it is huge and now rusty and out of business but not me. But not the knowledge she gave me. She is no more but her soul smiles looking at my expanding business and I know it is her knowledge that gives me self respect and independence today.
Yes, my husband has a good job and he stays away from home. I work as a tailor all day. I work despite my mother in law's taunts. She has a son who earns good money to send back home. She has a daughter in law who works nevertheless. This art of tailoring gave me my first income and sense of accomplishment when my first lehenga came out perfect. It has given me my identity and I am not merely my husband's appendage but an active member of this economy who can feed herself and her family. I am a cloth maker, a tailor, a participant in your smile when you wear the dress first time.
You give me fabric of your choice and I make clothes that fit the occasion. You wear it and look perfect on a party, at work or your casual acts. I make the wedding dress for the bride and the groom and the uniform for a child's first day at school and your first day at work, the first suit that you wore and have kept safe in your wardrobe. I give you more that just clothes and you give me more than just your money.
So I take leave of you ...
